京都水族館に、吻（ふん：口の突き出た部分）が、斜めに切り取られ、組織が見えてしまっているイルカがいます。
名前は「シード」。１４歳で、野生から おそらく太地で捕獲され、群れの家族や仲間から離され、無理やり水族館に連れてこられました。
京都水族館には「シード」含め５人のイルカがいます。

イルカは発達した脳と言語力を持ち、仲間や家族とコミュニケーションをとりながら強い絆、高度で複雑な社会を築く動物だということは知られるところです。
しかしイルカのその社会性は 水族館の極めて小さなプールという限られた空間においては、非常に酷です。
「ディール」と「ビート」の仲は良いが、「シード」とは折が合わず、同じプールには入れられていません。
ショーにも一緒に出せない状態で「シード」は何年も２人とは隔離されています。
過去に一度、「ディード」にちょっかいを出され、怒った「シード」が執拗に「ディード」を追いかけ回し、「ディード」がプールの外に飛び出す という事故があったそうです。
二人の溝は埋まることはなく、隔離に至ったようです。
水族館に監禁されているイルカたちは、様々な場所、群れ、コミュニティーから連れてこられた、”寄せ集め”です。気が合うとも限らず、良い関係が築けなくても、一生涯、何年も何十年も、自分の意思で離れることも、姿を隠すことも、どこにも行くこともできません。
自然の環境とはかけ離れた、小さなプールの中で、死ぬまで終わりのない毎日を過ごします。そのストレスを想像してみてください。
水族館は当然、この事実を熟知しています。
“かわいくない” 姿となってしまった「シード」はこの先どうなるのでしょうか？
誰とも仲良くできず、見せられない、見せたくない顔となってしまった「シード」は 移動がなければ、おそらく一生、隔離されたこの極めて小さなプールで独りで過ごすことになるでしょう。
水族館が行っていることは、イルカたちにとってどれだけ残酷なことなのかと思います。
「シード」に酷いケガを負わせたのは水族館です。
水族館はすでにイルカたちから多くを奪っています。
そしてさらなる負荷をイルカたちに強要しています。
