[Dolphin without a snout / Thoughts of crossing dolphins / can’t go anywhere]
At the Kyoto Aquarium, there is a dolphin whose snout (the part where the mouth sticks out) is cut off diagonally and the tissue is visible.
The name is “Seed”. At the age of 14, she was probably captured in Taiji from the wild, separated from herd family and companions, and forced into the aquarium.
There are 5 dolphins including “Seed” in the Kyoto Aquarium.
“Deel” Male 12 years old (born 2009) Place of birth: Unknown
“Beat” Male 15 years old (born 2006) Place of birth: Unknown
“Seed” Male 14 years old (born 2007) Place of birth: Wild (Taiji)
“Ten” Female 12 years old (born 2009) Place of birth: Unknown
“Kia” Female 12 years old (born 2009) Place of birth: Wild (Taiji) Pregnant, scheduled to give birth in early August
It is well known that dolphins have a well-developed brain and linguistic ability, and are animals that build strong bonds and sophisticated and complex societies while communicating with friends and family.
But the social nature of dolphins is extremely harsh in the limited space of an aquarium’s tiny pool.
“Deal” and “Beat” are on good terms, but “Seed” doesn’t match and they aren’t in the same pool.
The “seed” has been isolated from the two for years, unable to be shown together at the show.
Once in the past, “Deed” was given a little bit, and an angry “Seed” relentlessly chased “Deed”, and “Deed” jumped out of the pool.
The gap between the two was not filled, and it seems that they were isolated.
The dolphins in the aquarium are a “collection” of dolphins brought from various places, herds and communities. They can’t leave, hide, or go anywhere for a lifetime, years, or decades, even if they don’t get along and have a good relationship.
Spend endless days until death in a small pool far from the natural environment. Imagine that stress.
Aquariums are, of course, familiar with this fact.
What will happen to the “Seed” that has become “not cute” in the future?
The “Seed”, who couldn’t get along with anyone and had a face that he couldn’t show or didn’t want to show, would probably spend his entire life alone in this tiny, isolated pool.
I wonder how cruel what the aquarium is doing for the dolphins.
It was the aquarium that injured the “Seed”.
The aquarium is already robbing the dolphins a lot.
And it is forcing the dolphins to carry more load.
It is artificial breeding.
We will collect and share more information about future “Seed”.
[About the treatment of the dolphin “seed” that has lost his rostrum]
The answer to the question was that the veterinarian was doing the right thing. On this day, the treatment has done 3 times a day, all done by the trainer.
Regarding the treatment, what I could visually confirm by observation ・ Sprinkle water with a hose and wash the wound. ・ The trainer didn’t seem to be applying any medicine, and he rub the wound with his hands.
In this act of “rubbing the wound”, you can see how the “Seed” dislikes it. When he brought his hand close to the wound, Seed often showed actions to avoid it, and the trainer was doing it while giving a reward meal to soothe.
When we asked a person who is studying dolphins about this behavior, it is speculated that this is “desensitization training”.
“Desensitization training” is a method of overcoming pain, fear, and anxiety by gradually giving stimuli that cause pain, fear, and anxiety. In this case, When a veterinarian treats a patient, it may have the purpose of allowing the “Seed” to accept the treatment without hesitation or to keep it stationary.
Since the feeding was already prepared and given to each individual, it was not possible to confirm whether or not the medicine was contained in it.
“Maria” who was in a terrible state with purulent oral cavity (died July 30, 2019) We will post tomorrow about the treatment this aquarium has done for her. The Kyoto Aquarium also refuses to disclose information at this time. The aquarium itself is new and located in a vast park, so it’s popular with family and couples, but what about animals? I think it is important to leave facts that have not been revealed until now in the data and develop discussions based on those facts and evidences.
