今年もまた9月になると同時に、イルカ漁の猟期に入ります。
「イルカ追い込み漁は残酷ではない。」
太地町の三軒町長の言葉です。
2014年1月17日、追い込み漁によりアルビノのバンドウイルカが捕獲されました。
この時、同時に約233頭のバンドウイルカの群れが追い込まれました。
まだ1歳の子どもだった、アルビノのイルカ。
母親をはじめ、家族や仲間の群れはどうしても目立ってしまう アルビノの子供イルカを真ん中におき、取り囲み 大勢で守りながら泳いでいたそうです。
このようなイルカの行動に “思慮深さ” を感じずにはいられません。
この日捕獲された233頭のバンドウイルカの群れは、5日間にわたり選別が行われ、最終的に47頭が生体捕獲、46頭が殺されました。
現在も 「スピカ」と名付けられたアルビノのバンドウイルカは、くじらの博物館に収容されています。
大勢の家族や仲間で、1人の子どもを守ろうとしていたイルカたち。
太地町長の言葉が蘇ります。
「イルカ追い込み漁は残酷ではない。」
想像力は、イルカや他の動物たちにだけ与えられたものではないはずです。
しかし太地町長の言葉に、“思慮深さ“を感じ取ることができるでしょうか。
決められるのは私たちです。
イルカたちのドラマも忘れることなく、どうするべきか判断していってほしいと思います。

いおワールドかごしま水族館で、「待望 イルカの赤ちゃんが誕生」というお祝いムードのニュースがありました。
しかし、この影でどれほどのイルカの死と苦しみがあるのかは伝えられません。
いおワールドかごしま水族館では、
2008年〜-2019年の間に、イルカは16回妊娠しています。
そのうち現在生きているイルカは、たった３人。
死産・流産・生まれて５日以内に死亡しているイルカは、なんと１１人もいます。
死亡率、８９％。
母の目の前で、子供が溺れていく姿を見るのはどのような気持ちがするでしょう。
なお、以前投稿した、『イルカへ投与していた薬６１種類、プールには消毒液』の水族館は、ここ、いおワールドかごしま水族館です。
